SMOKING AND ORAL HEALTH….

Let me just begin with a saying “BETTER TO BE LATE THEN SORRY”. This saying sits perfectly for Smoking. We all know that smoking is directly linked with lung diseases. But do we know that smoking has a major bad effect on our oral health as well.

Most common effects of smoking:

  1. Teeth staining: smokers have more stains and tartar around their teeth then non-smokers.
  2. Gum diseases: Basically, smokers have less healing efficiency then non smokers making it worse for any gum disease to resolve.
  3. Tooth loss.
  4. Mouth cancer.
  5. They are at higher risk to develop Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis
  6. Smokers palate
  7. oral cancers
  8. Leucoplakias, etc

The person who smokes has lower resistance to any infection and has compromised healing after any sort of treatment or surgery.

EFFECT OF SMOKING ON GUMS:

The connection between smoking and gingivitis is -Plaque formation. Our oral cavity is a place full of bacteria’s – Oral Microbiome. There are good bacteria which promotes oral health and then there are Bad / Harmful bacteria. Smoking attracts those harmful bacteria and lead to Plaque/tartar/Calculus formation. Plaque formation occurs in between the teeth and gum, causing gum recession and later loosening of teeth.

SMOKING STAINING OUR TEETH:

The main component in tobacco: Nicotine stains our teeth giving an unpleasant aesthetics. Initially stains could get removed but if left untreated they might get harder to remove or might not get completely removed.

MOUTH CANCER MAIN CAUSE: SMOKING:

Oral tobacco consumption is a leading cause of Mouth Cancer. The components in the tobacco causes genetic changes in the cell causing cancer. 90% of the population suffers from mouth cancer and with the underlying tobacco consumption habit.

You can always look back and learn from the bad habits you had in the past or have in the present and try to avoid those in your future.

Smoking is one the habit that should be eliminated as soon as possible. And that could be the best thing you can do to yourself.
