HABITS AND THEIR EFFECTS ON TEETH

HABITS AND THEIR EFFECTS ON TEETH

A habit is tendency towards an act that has become a repeated performance, relatively fixed, consistent and easy to perform by an individual. Common habits include Thumb sucking and Tongue thrusting. Your child may have any one or a combination of these habits.

Thumb sucking is defined as the placement of thumb or one or more fingers in varying depth into the mouth. Thumb sucking is considered normal until second year of age. The habit is considered abnormal when the habit presists beyond preschool period. In fact, thumb sucking can even be psychological. It usually manifests in lonely children.

Thumb sucking can lead to many dental abnormalities. These abnormalities include: High narrow arched palate, Prognathic maxilla, Retrognathic mandible, and Open bite tendency. They can also include Proclined upper incisors, Retroclined lower incisors, Increased overjet, Anterior open bite, and Posterior crossbites. Thumb sucking habit can be treated via psychological therapy, reminder therapy, or mechanotherapy. The specifics of these therapies will be known to your nearest pediatric dentist.

Tongue thrust is defined as a condition in which the tongue makes contact with any teeth anterior to the molars during swallowing. It can also result in dental abnormalities like proclination of anterior teeth, anterior open bite, bimaxillary protrusion, posterior open bite, and posterior crossbite. Habit breaking appliances can be given by a pediatric dentist. The pediatric dentist can also teach the child correct methods of swallowing.

Other habits include pacifier sucking, mouth breathing, lip biting, nail biting, etc.

Common ways to get rid of thumb sucking and pacifier sucking habit include:

  • Providing an alternative comfort option like singing a song, holding a stuffed toy, or looking at books.
  • Use patience, stretching, and breathing techniques to soothe the child
  • Limit pacifier use
  • Make your child aware of habit and talk to them about stopping
