A vast majority of our patients, visit us for dentures. They have several questions. This blog answers a few frequently asked questions.
When a patient wants a replacement of teeth without invasive or surgical procedures such as implants. Dentures are removable and can be inserted and removed by the patient at their will. Dentures can be either partial or complete. Partial dentures replace a few missing teeth. Complete dentures replace all the teeth.
Recent advances in materials have led to more comfortable materials which provide a great fit. However, removable appliances require some adapting from the patient. With time, patients definitely get used to the dentures and are able to attain full function with them.
In terms of temporary discomfort, here is what you can expect and how to manage:
Sore spots may be due to sharp surfaces on the inner side of the denture. The patient should immediately inform the dentist. The dentist can then smoothen the surface. The dentist may also advice some gels to treat the inflamed tissues.
As the dentures are removable, initially the patient will experience some amount of speech difficulty and discomfort. There are certain sounds which are more difficult to pronounce as they require proper placement of the tongue. With dentures, it takes time for the tongue movements to adapt accordingly. The patient can visit the dentist and verify that the borders of the dentures are in their proper position. However, speech difficulty usually disappears with time as the patient becomes comfortable with the dentist.
We must remember that dentures are not natural teeth. They are not attached to the jaws. For this reason, patients are advised to avoid hard and sticky foods. However, the patient can start eating hard foods when they become comfortable with the denture.
