ULCERS

ULCERS

Do you suffer from frequent ulcerations? Almost every individual has suffered from an ulcer in their life.  Ulcers are also called canker sores. Ulcers are usually white or yellow, surrounded by a red border, and can occur anywhere in the mouth. They are usually less than 1 mm in diameter.

Ulcers are usually painful and do not allow the patient to eat. However, they are usually not a cause for worry. In approximately 1-2 weeks, majority of ulcers will heal by themselves.

Few common causes for ulcers are:

  • Stress
  • Injury usually while brushing
  • Injury due to sharp teeth
  • Ill-fitting dentures
  • Acidic foods
  • Frequent usage of certain class of drugs
  • Underlying immune system related medical conditions

No matter what the cause, patients usually experience pain, soreness, burning sensation, discomfort, weakness, fever, and swollen lymph nodes.

There are many treatment options available but they all aim to reduce the discomfort which the patient experiences and facilitate healing of the ulcer.

Treatment options vary largely from home remedies to medications to gels. In addition, the root cause of ulceration must also be treated via medication.

Ulcers are of many times. It is therefore essential to undergo a dental checkup in case of frequent ulcerations or if the ulcers last for longer than 14 days. The dentist can examine the ulcers and determine not only the type of ulcer but the cause and suggest valuable remedies.
