baby’s teeth

Your baby’s teeth-What you need to know!

Children are particularly irritable while teething. Here is what you need to know about teething, what is normal during teething, and what you can do to help reduce the symptoms of teething.

The first appearance of teeth through the gums is called as teething. Teething starts around the age of 6 months and the child acquires the full set of primary teeth by the age of 3 years.

The order of eruption of                            baby teeth is given below

The charts given below depict the age at which both the primary and permanent teeth erupt.

Symptoms which are normal during teething are:

  • Irritability
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fussiness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Drooling more than usual

Symptoms which are not normal include

  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Rash

Here is what you can do to help your child if they are having sore or tender gums.

  • Gently rub or massage the gums using a clean finger or a cold spoon
  • Allow the child to chew on cold/ frozen fruits or vegetables.
  • Give them a teether.
    • Tips for using teething.
      • Teether can be frozen to provide relief.
      • Teethers should be made of solid rubber. Make sure to avoid liquid-filled teething rings which may break causing the liquid to leak.
      • Teether should not be dipped sugary substances.
      • Teething necklaces, bracelets or anklets should be avoided as they may cause choking, strangulation, mouth injury and infection.

The U.S.FDA does not advise benzocaine containing gels or homeopathic tablets for children under the age of 2 years.

After the erupt here is how you should maintain your baby’s oral hygiene.

BABY (ONLY GUMS, NO TEETH): Cleanse your baby’s gums with a soft, clean cloth after the morning feeding and before bed.

FIRST APPEARANCE OF TEETH: Use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush to clean the teeth twice a day.

UNDER THE AGE OF 3 YEARS: use a smear/rice grain size of fluoride toothpaste

AGE 3-6 YEARS: use a pea-sized dollop of fluoride toothpaste
